Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where do you provide therapy?
In-home services are located in Danville, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, and the Lamorinda area.
Visits to surrounding communities may be available for an additional travel fee.
Virtual visits are provided throughout California.
2. What is in-home therapy, and how is it different from clinic-based therapy?
In-home therapy means we come directly to you. Sessions happen at home with you or another adult caregiver present, so that you have the opportunity to observe or participate in sessions. We are able to work together to work on communication where it happens naturally without disruption to you or your child’s schedule.
3. Do you offer teletherapy?
Yes! In addition to providing teletherapy throughout California, I use it with local clients as a way to reduce illness and to schedule makeup sessions.
4. Can you visit my toddler or preschooler child at their daycare or preschool? How can we do that?
Usually yes! Please confirm the facility’s policies with your director. Once approved, we will work with them to provide anything additional they may require and to schedule visits at a time convenient to them. When possible, we provide therapy right in the classroom during their usual routines.
5. Do you visit school-aged children at their private schools?
With the permission of the school, yes. Please confirm permission with your Principal/Head of School. Once approved, we will work with them to provide anything additional they may require and to schedule visits at a time convenient to them.
6. How long will my child need speech therapy?
While every child’s timeline is different, as part of your child’s services, we will meet every 3 months to review progress toward goals, make any adjustments to goals, treatment approach, or session frequency and duration, and discuss when therapy may no longer be needed.
Treatment review meetings are scheduled as 30-minute virtual appointments and are provided at no charge. School-aged children are welcome and encouraged to participate.
7. What can I expect during my child’s evaluation?
All evaluations start with a discussion about your child’s strengths, interests, family life, medical history, and areas you hope to see developed. With toddlers and preschoolers, we will ask you a lot of questions about what you’ve noticed them doing, and will learn more about them during play.
With school-aged children, depending on their needs, we will usually collect a recording and take a close look at their natural language, and also provide a norm-referenced assessment in the area(s) they may need help with.
After the evaluation, we will review our report with you, answer your questions, and make a plan for next steps. If therapy is recommended, we will discuss frequency and help you schedule ongoing sessions. If therapy is not recommended, we may suggest checking back in 6–12 months if concerns continue.
8. My child takes a long time to warm up. How can we complete an evaluation if they won’t talk to you?
Creatively! This is common with young children. We understand that some children need time to observe and take in changes before they are comfortable engaging, and we strive to bring to your home a predictable, low-pressure environment where your child can feel secure.
If we are unable to elicit your child’s natural communication during our initial meeting, we will work together to gather any needed information. Often caregivers can, in addition to sharing their own observations, collect guided video recordings that can be used to inform our assessments.
9. I disagree with my child’s assessment. How do I request an independent educational evaluation (IEE)?
You will start by contacting your school’s special education director and making a written request–email counts! Copy your child’s case manager and/or the school principal. Once they have agreed to an outside evaluation, you have the right to select your own evaluator.
